Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is an advanced life-support system that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during critical illness. It provides oxygenation, circulation, and time for recovery when conventional treatments fail. At Ananthapuri Hospitals, ECMO and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are delivered through a highly trained multidisciplinary team ensuring rapid stabilization and round-the-clock critical care for the sickest cardiac patients.
ECMO works by circulating blood outside the body through an oxygenator that removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen before returning it to the patient. It is used for severe cardiac shock, refractory cardiac arrest, massive heart attacks, and cardiopulmonary collapse.
At Ananthapuri, ECMO is initiated within a fully equipped cardiac ICU supported by intensivists, cardiac anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and interventional cardiologists. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols are executed immediately during emergencies with defibrillation, ventilation, drug therapy, and mechanical support. ECMO acts as a bridge to recovery, cardiac intervention, or definitive surgery depending on patient condition.
ECMO is usually started as an emergency treatment. Family members are counseled regarding indications, support goals, and the ongoing care plan. Patients remain in the cardiac ICU under continuous monitoring with daily imaging, lab evaluation, and organ function assessment. Recovery depends on the underlying condition; once the heart or lungs show improvement, the ECMO flow is gradually reduced and the patient is weaned off. After stabilization, patients undergo rehabilitation, nutritional support, and long-term follow-up.
